On a Roll

When pride comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom. (Prov. 11:2)

My husband, Nick, had just become a Christian. Soon we joined one of our church’s small groups that met at Don and Audrey’s house.

One evening Nick wanted to join in the discussion about creation, and he started to mention his interest in astronomy. But one small slip of the tongue—he said “astrology” rather than “astronomy”—and I thought Audrey would come unglued.

Nick tried to explain his mistake, but Audrey was on a roll. She let us know in no uncertain terms that she had been a Christian for a long time—much longer than Nick, of course—and that he should renounce his interest in astrology and the occult immediately. Audrey’s spiritual pride was clearly on display, and she wanted everyone to know that she was much farther along on her journey than any of the rest of us.

I’d like to say that Audrey and Nick were able to clear up the misunderstanding quickly, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Nick was deeply offended and didn’t want to go back. We were able to find another small group where we felt welcome and where we’ve both grown spiritually and relationally. Audrey eventually apologized. Nick forgave her but has avoided being in a group with her.

Sometimes a competitive nature is good. If an athlete is competitive, that’s good. Their innate drive can help them push themselves to excel and win. But if that same competitive nature is carried over into a person’s spiritual life, it can result in spiritual pride. The “I’m further along than you” or “let me set you straight” attitude is not so good.

God values humility (see Phil. 2:3), and no one should boast. “The one who boasts must boast in the Lord” (1 Cor. 1:31).
