Part of the Family

He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself . . . to the praise of His glorious grace. (Eph. 1:5–6)

Marcie squealed as she hung up the phone. “Clint, that was the social worker. They’re placing a foster baby with us—tonight!” Clint grinned and said, “We better get some things ready. Is it a boy or a girl? How old?”

“A baby boy, just a few weeks old. I already have the crib set up, so let’s get out the bottles and pull out Will’s baby clothes. First, let’s tell Will and Jamie we’ll have a baby in the house tonight!”

A few hours later the family returned home with a baby boy named Jacob. His biological parents had drug problems, and he needed a safe place to stay for a while—maybe for good. Marcie knew their family had an amazing opportunity to shower Jesus’ love on this little one for however long he would stay.

“Mom, when will we know if Jacob can stay with our family?” Will asked.

“It may be a couple of years before we could adopt him,” Marcie explained. “But we’re called to love him and care for him right now, and no matter what the future holds, God can use our time in this little boy’s life to draw him close. We’ll just love him one day at a time and pray that the Spirit will work in and through us to minister to his needs, physical and spiritual.”

Foster care is a special calling for those who are willing to step into the life of a child to make a difference, whether for the short or long-term. If you are not in a position to take on that responsibility yourself, pray about supporting a ministry or a family who is looking after the needs of these children.
