Peace and Quiet

Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matt. 11:28)

The dog was barking, the baby was crying, and dinner was burning. It was a typical five o’clock hour at the Jamison home. Danielle put Hunter in his high chair long enough to pull the casserole out of the oven, but he screamed in protest at being put down. Tyler appeared at the kitchen door with ink all over his face and hands. “Mommy, I did an art project.” Oh, lovely, Danielle thought to herself. The phone rang loudly. “Hon, I’m going to be a little late. I’ve got to get these specs out today.” OK, I’m about to lose it.

Knowing she needed a change of scenery and a moment to pray, she said, “Tyler, put your shoes on. We’re all going to go on a walk.”

“Now? What about dinner?” he asked.

“I think it needs to cool off,” Danielle replied, referring more to herself than the casserole.

As she pushed the double stroller down the street, Danielle took a deep breath and prayed silently. Lord, life feels like more than I can handle. I know it’s just little stuff, but it’s adding up and taking a toll on me. Please give me Your peace so I can live for You no matter what my circumstances are. Help me glorify You in the things I do and say, and please grant me wisdom and strength to live by Your grace.

We’ve probably all experienced that feeling of just trying to stay afloat, whether we have dealt with more serious problems or just day-to-day difficulties. However, if we are walking with the Lord, He can equip us to live in a way that brings Him glory. We can’t do this out of our own strength but only by His Spirit.
