Perfect Fit

I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink. (Matt. 25:35)

Once a year my friend Judy takes two weeks of vacation from her job as a pediatric intensive care nurse and goes on trips with a Christian organization that provides desperately needed surgery free of charge to people in various parts of the world. I admit I was a little jealous that Judy got to be a part of God’s amazing plan to minister to needy people. So I began to pray and ask Him what I could do.

I don’t have any medical training, and I don’t have anything special to offer—just my willingness to serve God and to help others.

A couple of months after I prayed that prayer, my husband, Kevin, and I began attending a new church. One Sunday the pastor spoke about their annual mission trip to Haiti where they would be taking medical supplies and children’s clothing to a Christian orphanage. Volunteers from the church would help the overworked Haitian caregivers clean and repair the building, as well as feed, bathe, play with, and share Bible stories with the orphans. Our children are grown, and I miss having a little one to hold and care for. Kevin turned to me and smiled. “Sounds like a perfect fit for you.”

It’s easy to get so wrapped up in our own schedules and agendas that we sometimes lose sight of what God is doing beyond our own community. Opportunities abound to minister to the poor and the needy. If you haven’t been involved in missions, ask God to enlarge your vision. Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me” (Matt. 25:40). Ask Him to give you a heart to serve those who are in need.
