Preparing for Flight
Preparing for Flight
I know the plans I have for you . . . plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Jer. 29:11)
As my son, Jake, approaches high school graduation, many have asked if he will follow the career paths of his father and grandfather. I know Jake could be a great doctor, but he needs to chart his own course. More precisely, he needs to follow God’s plan for his life.
When Jake approached me a few nights ago—concerned about college, his major, and a future career—I tried to reassure him and help him sort through everything. I let him bounce ideas off me, even some that sounded far-fetched. I’ll admit I had to hold my tongue a few times, but in the end I know Jake must make his own decisions. I’m excited to see where God takes my son in life and to see what kind of man he becomes on the journey.
Parents should provide their children a safe and nurturing nest and then give them strong and able wings to leave that nest. As the time approaches for your children to leave home, you can prepare them for the uncertainties ahead by helping them understand that God loves them and has a purpose for their lives.
While most teens are not interested in lectures about God’s sovereignty and perfect will, they will allow you to encourage them with Scripture and prayer if you do one crucial thing first: listen to them. You may be tempted to point out how outlandish your child’s dreams are, but choose instead to listen with interest and an open mind. Then challenge your teen to seek God, His will, and His provisions. Assure him that God is interested in their dreams, passions, and plans. Finally, express confidence that God has great things in store for your child.
