Reflecting His Strength
Reflecting His Strength
Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. (Ps. 41:1 niv)
Noticing her friend’s tired face as Sandy walked into their prayer group, Beth felt concern. “Hi Sandy,” she said, giving her a quick hug. As they moved toward their seats, Beth asked, “How’s your mom doing?”
“She’s just holding on,” Sandy responded. “My sisters and I are trying to set up a schedule that allows someone to be with her at the nursing home most of the time. But of course, our dad needs us, too, and my mother-in-law is recovering from a stroke. It’s such a blessing that my job has flexible hours.”
“I don’t know how you’re coping, let alone continuing to work,” Beth sympathized.
Sandy smiled. “I don’t know either, but I do know God is sustaining me. His grace is amazing. I see it in so many ways as He helps us with our daily decisions. And I see it in my mother’s sweet acceptance of her difficult situation.”
Beth was glad to hear her friend’s testimony of God’s goodness. But she also determined to be a better friend and encourager by praying for Sandy’s strength and finding ways to help lighten her load.
As baby boomers reach retirement age and seniors live longer, Sandy’s dilemma will be shared by multitudes of families. Three out of four caregivers are women, and 40 percent of them may be caring for both children and elderly parents simultaneously. The Bible offers direction and wisdom in a world that shuns sacrifice and encourages self-focused choices. God gives us strength to face tough circumstances with grace and to model servanthood with joy. If your present season of life leaves you weary and drained, seek prayer support, find ways to nourish yourself, and ask God daily to refresh your spirit.
