Remembering Rocks

Fasten both stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the Israelites. (Exod. 28:12)

“Mama, what are these rocks for?” my daughter asked. We were working outside, making piles of rocks in different flower beds.

I explained to her that in the Old Testament, God told the Israelites to set up stones of remembrance. In Genesis, Abraham built altars to the Lord in places where he had memorable spiritual experiences. In Joshua, God instructed the people to set up a memorial to Him by the Jordan River because He had dried up its waters so they could cross safely to the other side. God even wanted two memorial stones fastened to the shoulders of Aaron’s priestly garment, the ephod. The Lord wanted His people to remember all that He had done for them. And God knew that seeing those piles of rocks would cause others to ask what they were. In this way His people could tell of His faithfulness and goodness.

“Daddy and I decided to set up some memorial stones of our own. This pile is to thank Him for healing you of seizures; that pile is because God helped Daddy find a job; and this pile is just because God has been so good to us. Our rocks are sort of like a journal without words.”

“Cool, Mama! Let’s call them our remembering rocks!”

When we remember what God has done in the past, we can trust Him more completely with our present. When we reflect on His faithfulness in both good times and hard times, when we look back on how He has delivered us from sickness or financial difficulties, we praise Him with our lives and hearts. Those spiritual stones sharpen our faith as we grow in the confidence of His promises. We are reminded, and He is glorified.

Set up some “remembering rocks” before the Lord.
