Seeking the Lost

Let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)

“So, Katie, what challenges have you faced lately?” Michelle was a good friend and mentor, and she didn’t mince words when it came to our spiritual lives.

“Things have been really good lately. We love our church and our small-group Bible study.”

“That’s great! Are you reaching out to any non-Christians?”

“Well, I don’t really cross paths with many non-Christians,” I said hesitantly.

“Maybe you could start close to home,” Michelle suggested. “Last Christmas I hosted a tea for the women on my street. That tea opened the door for me, and now I have a relationship with them and a place to start sharing the love of Jesus.”

“That’s a great idea. I could invite the young moms in my neighborhood over for a playdate. I know the wonderful things God has done for me through Jesus, and I don’t want to keep that good news to myself.”

God has called us to be salt and light to the world, and this means we must seek out those who don’t know Him. Yes, we must not live like the world or embrace sin, but we are supposed to engage nonbelievers, be authentic with them, and share the goodness of God with them just as Jesus did in His life on earth. Sometimes we can unintentionally isolate ourselves by surrounding ourselves only with believers—working at Christian companies, attending Christian schools, using Christian-run businesses, and being involved in our churches.

Where could you get to know someone who needs the Lord? Consider your interests, responsibilities, and daily routine. You could take classes at the community center, jog with a neighbor, join the PTA at your child’s school, or any number of other things. Touching the lives of others is an eternal investment.
