Shallow Living

Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God. (Ps. 42:5)

Sarah sat down and ordered coffee while waiting for her friend Liz. She checked her e-mail, made a call about her daughter’s birthday party, wrote a note for work, and planned dinner. Liz walked in the coffee shop, and after a hug Liz remarked on how tired Sarah looked.

“I am tired. I’ve got Jill’s birthday party to plan. I’ve got to take Brett to soccer practice. I’m behind on a project at work, and don’t get me started about the summer camps and the home projects,” Sarah went on. “I just can’t seem to get it all done, no matter how hard I try.”

“Have you spent any time with the Lord lately?” Liz asked with her typical directness. “Because when we’re so stressed and at the end of ourselves, it’s probably because we haven’t plugged into our Power Source,” she said.

“No, I don’t seem to have time to do that either,” Sarah said. “Something’s always more pressing, something that needs to be done right now.”

“Setting priority time with Him is important. He says He will direct our paths, and He can help you order your days,” Liz said. “Busyness, even if it’s for God, can make life shallow and just one long to-do list, so that at the end of the day, all you’ve done is checked things off. Ask Him, and He will show you what He wants you to do.”

Sometimes the expectations of others can place real demands on our time, crowding out the things we should do like spending time with the Lord. So today, think of things you don’t need to do, things you can delegate, and things that can wait. Spend time with the Father first. He promises it will be time well spent.
