Shrewd as Serpents

How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping Your word. (Ps. 119:9)

Tracy couldn’t believe what she was seeing. While passing her ten-year-old son’s room, she had caught him looking at suggestive material on his computer. “Brian, what was that?”

“I was looking up information for my project, and this is one of the websites that came up.” After talking to him further, Tracy realized that Brian had stumbled across the site while entering a few innocent search words for his report. He admitted that it wasn’t hard to accidentally pull up such pages, but he was quick to assure her that it had not been deliberate.

Later Tracy discussed the incident with her husband, John. Both were appalled at how easily their son had been able to access such explicit pictures. John, knowing how powerful visual images are to males, was saddened at how his son’s young eyes came across the material due to a lack of security. He knew he should waste no time on installing an Internet filter and decided it would be best to move the computer to a more public place. John also knew he had to have a serious talk with Brian to undo some of the damage.

From pornography to predators, the dangers of the Internet are real for our families and for us. Jesus warned His disciples, “Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as serpents and as harmless as doves” (Matt. 10:16). Type “Internet filter” into your search engine. You’ll find plenty of easy-to-install software that will keep suggestive material off the screen, including risqué advertisements, and it will help protect children from predators. If you haven’t already, don’t waste a second on taking precautionary measures to safeguard your family’s integrity today.
