Silencing Shame

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. (Ps. 103:12)

“You seemed quiet at small group tonight, Amber. Is something bothering you?” Lily asked.

“To be honest, I just feel like I’m coming from a different place than most of you,” Amber admitted. “You guys grew up in church, and you’ve lived good lives. I can’t say that about myself. I just became a Christian a few months ago, and I look back on my wild life with a lot of regret. I was really promiscuous, and I don’t want everyone to know about my past.”

“Amber, you don’t need to feel that way. We’ve all struggled with sin, and none of us is perfect. We all need Jesus desperately. And none of us is better than anyone else.”

“But what do I do with my past? I mean, I’m ashamed of the things I did. I know now how wrong they were,” Amber said.

“You confess them to God, and you trust that He forgives you completely. He is not a God of guilt and shame; He is a God of freedom and forgiveness. Who knows? He might bring someone across your path who is going through the same thing, and you can share about how Jesus set you free from your sin,” Lily encouraged.

“I never thought about that,” Amber reflected. “Thanks for not judging me, and thanks for reminding me of the truth.”

Sexual sin often results in shame, alienation, and regret. However, all sin is serious—all sin leads to death, and we are all dead in our sins without the salvation of Jesus. If you or someone you know is struggling with the guilt of sexual sin, be encouraged that Christ’s love can break those chains and lead you to true freedom. God promises that His forgiveness is unconditional and unending.
