Teach Them Well

Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house. (Deut. 6:7)

Our eight-year-old daughter, Leah, asked Jesus to be her Savior when she was six years old. After talking with her about it for several months, we knew she was ready. She understood that she was a sinner who needed a Savior. She understood that Jesus died for her.

But we didn’t count on the fierceness of the enemy’s attack on her baby Christian heart. She began questioning her salvation and things like how do we know that Jesus lived and that He rose from the dead. She wanted to know how she could be sure she belonged to Jesus.

We took her back to Scripture. We showed her where Paul teaches us to put on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:11). We showed her where Jesus appeared to more than five hundred people after His resurrection (1 Cor. 15:6). We showed her where John tells us that we can know we are His (1 John 5:13). We talked to her about renewing her mind with Jesus’ truth rather than listening to the whispered lies of the enemy (Rom. 12:2). We told her other books were written around that time that talked about Jesus.

Showing her the truth in God’s Word has satisfied her questions. And showing her how to find the answers for herself has helped. But we are still working on how to deflect the enemy’s fiery arrows with God’s truth. I pray every day that my baby girl will become adept at handling “the shield of faith” (Eph. 6:16) and draw so close to the Lord that she will never doubt her salvation.

Our children’s spiritual growth doesn’t stop when they become saved. In fact, it’s just beginning. Discipling your children is an honor, a sacred trust, guiding them as they grow in the Lord.
