The Classroom

Teach a youth about the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. (Prov. 22:6)

When Jack was in kindergarten, he came home with a flyer announcing Winter Fest in December. Christmas was not mentioned. Over coffee I asked advice from two friends with older kids.

Cindy said, “After Tommy was born, I heard a Christian educator speaking on worldview. A child’s worldview is shaped as early as six years of age. We have to be diligent to teach them about God.”

“I’m not even sure what worldview means,” I said.

“Worldview is what you believe about certain things, like God, Jesus, life after death,” Valerie said. Cindy nodded. “We need to know how a Christian worldview differs from other beliefs.” Valerie added, “You’ve already given Jack a good foundation, Joan. You talk to him about the Lord; you tell him Bible stories.”

“Yes, but how can I know what he’s being taught in school?”

“Volunteer in the classroom,” Cindy said. “Stay in touch with his teacher. Look through notebooks and textbooks he brings home to see what he’s studying.” Valerie added, “See if it’s undermining your values or trying to prove that God doesn’t exist.”

One of our most important jobs as parents is being involved in our children’s education. We need to know what they’re being taught in school. We also need to be supportive of our kids and an advocate for them when trouble comes along, remembering to honor Christ in our dealings with our children’s school. Even more critical is teaching our children at home about the Lord, equipping them with knowledge of the faith, giving them the tools they need when confronted with other beliefs. Where our kids are involved, we never stop studying!
