The Healer
The Healer
This is what I command you: love one another. (John 15:17)
Brenda heard the door slam as Erin stormed outside to board the school bus. Erin was Brenda’s fifth foster child, and she had been more of a challenge than the other four put together.
At age eleven, Erin was not only dealing with the normal adolescent issues and insecurities, but she was also dealing with an abusive past and a mother who wouldn’t stay away from drugs. Erin was angry and scared—she was broken. Anger punctuated many of her interactions with others, and fear kept her from trusting the people who could help her. Brenda prayed for Erin daily and frequently told the girl of God’s love for her. Brenda knew that while there were people who wanted to help Erin, only God could heal her wounded spirit.
After numerous counseling sessions and many hours spent on her knees, Brenda finally began seeing a breakthrough. Erin began asking Brenda questions about God and seemed more attentive during church. Brenda knew that Erin would be available for adoption soon. In spite of the difficulties, she was grateful for the time she had to share God’s love with a child who was in desperate need.
People experiencing deep emotional pain can be difficult and frustrating to deal with. While hurting people need someone who can help them, only God can truly enable them to overcome their problems and begin a work of restoration.
The Bible is full of examples of God’s healing power. The book of Psalms contains many powerful passages that comfort, encourage, and offer hope to those in deep distress. During difficult times when we’re tempted to give up, let us instead remember whom we worship and how the Lord of the universe specializes in fixing people who are broken.
