The Lord Cares

I will never leave you or forsake you. (Heb. 13:5)

I remember the day my dad left. It was a steamy summer afternoon, and I was six years old. He grabbed a couple of suitcases, tossed in his clothes and toiletries, and screeched out of the driveway. I only saw him a few times after that—usually on holidays. He was busy with his new wife and kids.

When I began dating, my insecurities went into overdrive. I was always afraid my boyfriends would leave, and they did. Looking back now, I realize now that dealing with my neediness couldn’t have been easy.

My husband and I married when I was barely twenty. I hadn’t healed sufficiently from my past and brought a lot of baggage into our marriage. The first time we disagreed, I thought the relationship would end. It didn’t. Every time we went through turmoil, I expected him to leave. He didn’t.

Four years after we got married, we became Christians. I began meeting with a counselor at church, and she helped me learn to deal with my insecurities. She said that as I began to trust in the Lord, because of who He is and His faithfulness, my fear of abandonment would heal. It’s been a long process, but as I grow in my walk with the Lord, I’m trusting in Him to provide for me and to meet all of my needs.

Many people deal with a fear of abandonment. We bring this fear into our relationships, and frequently we may believe we are not worthy of anyone’s love—not even God’s. But in spite of the fact that people are bound to let us down, God never will. He always loves us, always wants the best for us, and He promises never to leave us.
