The Perfect Dress

Your beauty should not consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold ornaments or fine clothes. (1 Pet. 3:3)

Wendy and I stepped into our favorite department store and headed to the sale section, hoping to find something for our double date the next evening. After much sifting through several racks, I noticed a beautiful cobalt blue dress tucked behind some of the other dresses. I pulled it out and admired its beautiful color and modest bateau neckline. I was elated! It was as if God had saved it there just for me.

Wendy held up a silver dress with a plunging neckline. “What do you think?” she asked hesitantly. I could tell she liked the dress, but she also wanted an honest answer.

“You don’t like it, do you?” Wendy asked, sounding disappointed.

“It’s really pretty, but I think it might be a little too revealing. I think you’d really be uncomfortable in it.”

“I suppose you’re right,” Wendy agreed sheepishly. “I don’t want to give Ryan the wrong impression.” We both began looking for a more modest dress for her.

Today we see celebrities on the red carpet in designer gowns that may seem beautiful and glamorous but often are downright revealing. Today’s fashion icons can also be seen on the covers of magazines wearing tight or skimpy clothing that many women want to emulate. The trend to reveal more and more skin has carried over to our local department stores, and sometimes finding stylish yet modest clothing can be a challenge. In spite of our culture’s fascination with celebrities and what they’re wearing, God calls His children to a higher standard. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Trust the Lord to help you find stylish clothing that is fit for a daughter of the King.
