We Must Tell Them
We Must Tell Them
We . . . must tell a future generation the praises of the Lord. (Ps. 78:4)
When we brought our first daughter home from the hospital, we felt inadequate, unprepared, and, yes, exhausted. Not only were we responsible for taking care of her, but we also felt the weight of responsibility for her spiritual growth.
Our godly parents reminded us that the Ultimate Parent, God, has given us the “road map” to parenting in His Word. “God teaches us, through Moses, how to teach spiritual truth to our children,” said my mom. “He tells us to teach them during everyday life and ordinary circumstances, as we go about loving them and raising them,” she said.
So as an infant Carly heard Christian music in the car on the way to the grocery store. I read Bible stories to her from a baby storybook. We told her that God made her and loves her. We took her to church. As she grew, we said “good-night” prayers and a blessing before meals, and when we played at the park, I told her that God made the trees and the birds.
When Carly started preschool, I prayed for her in the car on the way to school (with open eyes, of course!). We asked God to help her find good friends, to learn about Him, to have fun on the playground. I always pointed out to Carly when God answered those prayers so that she would begin to look for His answers herself.
Now Carly and her sister Katie are both at college. And even though we did not parent perfectly, we had the Perfect Parent watching over us, giving us guidance, and forgiving us when we blew it.
It’s never too early to teach your children spiritual truth. Use teachable moments to help them apply biblical truth to their lives. And when they have questions, show them truth in Scripture.
