Weakness and Strength
Weakness and Strength
He gives strength to the weary and strengthens the powerless. (Isa. 40:29)
Lynn was actually relieved to have a name for the symptoms she had been battling for so many months. The doctor phoned to tell her the diagnosis: fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. She spoke with a specialist the next week to receive tips for managing her symptoms and was referred to The Arthritis Foundation to gather more information.
Over the next few weeks, Lynn educated herself about this painful illness that drained her energy and robbed her strength. She learned to pay attention to her nutritional needs, to pace her activity, and to accept her limitations. She also learned to find support in her family and friendships and to run to God, whose power is perfected in weakness (2 Cor. 12:9).
While Lynn’s ongoing prayer was for healing or remission, she was also thankful for an understanding family and good medical care.
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) often occur together. They are difficult to diagnose and frustrating to both the victim and their support system because the disability does not “show” and treatment success varies. Depression often accompanies this loss of strength and productivity, so it is essential to seek accurate information and learn good self-care.
For believers battling such illness, a prayer support system is vital. Learning to draw near to God and even embracing the limitations as an opportunity to know Him better can bring acceptance and meaning to such a trial. It might be helpful to seek out other patients for support and to learn together about battling CFS or other similar conditions.
If you are dealing with chronic pain or disability, ask God for the courage to remain a blessing to those you meet and live with.
