We’ll Do It

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Prov. 9:10)

Scanning through the mail, Vicki noticed her car payment, cell phone bill, and two credit card bills. Her heart sank. How are we going to come up with the money to pay all of these bills? With a big mortgage, Ed’s gas-guzzling truck, lots of restaurant dinners, and both boys enrolled in hockey, the money seemed to disappear as soon as their paychecks were deposited.

That night Vicki and Ed sat down to talk after the boys were in bed. They agreed that their finances had gotten out of hand when they bought their new house. Then they purchased new furniture on credit. The list went on. Even with Vicki taking on a full-time job, they wondered how they were going to make ends meet. “I can get a second job,” Ed suggested. “But we’ve got to cut way down on our expenses and start living within our means.”

Ed reached for Vicki’s hand and began to pray, “Lord, we’ve gotten ourselves into a mess, and we need Your help. Please give us wisdom so we can start living within our means. Forgive us for spending money needlessly, and help us to be satisfied with what You provide. Just show us what to do, and we’ll do it.”

It’s easy to spend more than you make. Sometimes just paying for the bare necessities is a challenge. So how do you survive in a world where the cost of living goes up faster than salaries, and necessities such as groceries and gas take a huge bite out of the household budget?

God has promised to provide all of our needs—notice that He said “needs,” not “wants” (see Phil. 4:19). Pray for wisdom and take serious steps to get out of debt and cut down on current expenses.
