Who Comes First?

I will instruct you and show you the way to go; with My eye on you, I will give counsel. (Ps. 32:8)

Rhonda tried to keep her voice down as she said to her husband, Bruce, “I used my last personal day yesterday. Sami still has a fever. Can you please stay home with her?”

“I have a huge project due on Friday. Just take the day unpaid.”

Rhonda ran her fingers through her damp hair. “But I’ve missed a week already with both kids getting the flu. My boss is getting irritated. I can’t afford to push it, especially now that she’s talking about cutting hours. Mine could be the first on the chopping block if I make her mad.”

“If I don’t finish this project on time, my job could be at risk.”

God, Rhonda prayed silently, we can’t send Sami to school sick. Should I risk getting in trouble or ask Bruce to put his job on the line? Bruce let out a long breath and reached for his cell phone. “Tell you what, I’ll call and see if they mind if I work from home today.”

“Thank you!” Rhonda hugged her husband, but inside, her nerves stirred. Was it a mistake to go back to work? she wondered. Bruce won’t always be able to make this kind of sacrifice. Will this be a constant struggle?

These days it is common for both parents to work outside the home. While the extra income and benefits cut money-related stresses, other frustrations come with the territory. Who should stay home when a child gets sick? Which parent takes time off for teacher conferences, school holidays, or unexpected calls from the principal? Which career should take precedence?

Like so many areas of family life, couples must seek God’s wisdom and direction while also respecting each other. Know that He sees and values our efforts, and He promises to send what we need when the unexpected happens.
