Woman to Woman

Older women are to . . . teach what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children. (Titus 2:3–4)

The committee chairman had just asked me, “Would you consider serving as our women’s ministry leader?” As I wrestled with that question, I watched my dear friend walking across the church parking lot. How I thanked God for Jane’s input into my life! Now widowed and in her seventies, I could still see her welcoming smile and hear her quiet voice asking me, a young Christian mom, her favorite question: “And what has God been showing you lately?”

God had filled my life with older women who showed me how to live for Him. Jane had taught me to pursue God and to share my faith with others. I had watched Marie as she extended hospitality and joyfully served others. Wanda’s love for homemaking and care for her family had taught me so much. And Leslie’s commitment to the special needs children she taught reflected God’s love and tenderness.

When I was a young Christian woman with no spiritual background, these women poured into me the wisdom, faith, and nurturing they had developed in their years of walking with Christ. Perhaps now, in my middle years, it was my turn to give back to other young women who needed mentors, role models, and encouragers.

Today our teens, single women, and young wives and mothers need mentors and healthy role models. They have grown up in a culture that does not value truth or godliness. Young women, do you need to seek out the friendship of older, godly women so you can learn from them? If you are mature, are you passing on your wisdom and love for Jesus to another generation of women?
