I, Yahweh, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. (Isa. 41:17)

“Tessa, I’ve got bad news. I’ve been laid off,” said Matt. “The economy is so bad, they’re closing my entire division.”

What followed was two years of complete dependence on and provision from the Lord. Tessa, who had been a stay-at-home mom, went back to work full-time in a job that was heaven sent. She and Matt pinched pennies, examining every single expense to lighten the load. They learned how to garden, repair things themselves, and cook from scratch.

God did many miraculous things for their family during those two years. He didn’t provide a job for Matt, He didn’t keep the cars or appliances from breaking, and He didn’t keep them from having medical bills. He didn’t leave envelopes of cash in their mailbox or groceries on their doorstep, but somehow, some way, God always showed up to take care of them. He kept them in the palm of His hand, never forsaking them, always providing just when the days were the darkest.

Matt and Tessa learned that their Provider is the Lord, not a job, not a savings account, not their own ingenuity. They learned how to accept help from others and, in turn, how to help others in need. They learned that this world with its material trappings is not their home. They learned what is truly important.

When your husband loses his job, it is terrifying. You wonder, How will we survive? How will we pay the bills, save for retirement, put the kids through college? But your Father is crazy about you and knows your “impossible” situation provides an opportunity to demonstrate His faithfulness, goodness, provision, and unconditional love. So relax in His strong arms: He will come through for you!
