You Can do This
You Can Do This
Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from Him. (Ps. 62:5)
I couldn’t believe we were in the ER again. It was our fifth visit to the hospital in seven months—two surgeries for my husband, two for me—followed by more hospital bills then we’d expected to pile up in a lifetime, let alone in less than a year. Now my husband had chest pain and shortness of breath. Since Norm had a heart attack five years before, I knew it needed to be taken seriously. Still, a tiny voice inside me wailed, I can’t be here again! And God, we can’t afford this!
Tears threatened, so I made an excuse to leave Norm’s room. As I hid in the bathroom trying to regain control, I asked God to help me deal with whatever results came up. But I can’t do this, continued to echo inside.
Yes you can, My Father whispered. You aren’t here alone. Just hang on to Me. I walked out feeling stronger and less consumed by the stress of the situation. Whatever happened, with God’s help, I could deal with it.
When everyday struggles with kids, our husbands, work, and maintaining a home are compounded with unexpected events, we are often tempted to scream, “God, I can’t do this!” But we tend to forget that He is waiting to lighten the load. He may not remove the problem, but He can help us find answers, give us peace, and catch us when we crash from the exhaustion of it all. It’s reassuring to know that many of the psalms were written in the heat of major stress. They remind us of the power of staying tuned into Him through it all—listening for His voice, calling on His strength, and praying for His peace.
