You’re a Great Dad

Encourage one another and build each other up as you already are doing. (1 Thess. 5:11)

When my husband, Mark, and I found out we were expecting a baby, he was excited and worried at the same time. As an only child, he hadn’t spent much time around babies or young children. One day he asked me if I thought he would make a good father. “You’re a wonderful man, and you’ll make an excellent father,” I reassured him.

A few days later, as I was dusting our bedroom, I took a closer look at the books on Mark’s nightstand. They were all about parenting. One book in particular caught my eye. Curiosity got the better of me, and I picked it up. As I leafed through the pages, I saw that Mark had been taking notes throughout the book. He really did want to be a great dad. He was seeking the Lord for wisdom in His Word and through the sound advice of other godly Christians.

Several weeks after our son was born, I had taken a much-needed nap. When I woke, I saw Mark relaxing in the rocking chair feeding and cuddling with the baby. I quietly made my way over to them and gently hugged my husband.

“See,” I whispered, “I told you that you’d make a great dad!”

Mark smiled. “Thanks for reassuring me,” he said. “I needed to hear that.”

No matter how confident we may be, we all need encouragement. We are designed to respond to sincere, positive comments.

Try to find a way to encourage others on a regular basis, especially your loved ones. Focus on their good qualities and actions. In Hebrews 3:13 we are reminded that God wants us to “encourage each other daily.” Obey this command and watch to see what happens.
