Our Forgiving God
Our Forgiving God

Tear your hearts, not just your clothes, and return to the Lord your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, and He relents from sending disaster. (Joel 2:13)
Great Compassion
It’s easy for us to feel magnanimous when we show a little compassion. Our children mess up, and we cut them a little slack. A coworker drops the ball, and we cover for him. Our wife says something hurtful, and we let it roll off our back.
But our efforts to show compassion will always pale compared to what Almighty God demonstrates toward His people. In the Old Testament they were always turning their backs on Him, marrying people they were told not to marry, worshipping false gods, and committing countless wicked acts in direct, deliberate violation of His commands. While God did judge the Israelites for their sins, He remained ready to forgive when the people turned back to Him.
Ultimate Forgiveness
Our culture and even our churches tend to judge people and write them off. Many states have enacted “three strikes and you’re out” laws that keep people in jail without hope of release. Although such measures are often necessary for the safety of society, God never throws us out of the game spiritually. He remains gracious and loving, even when we ignore Him or break His laws. God always forgives when we turn our hearts toward Him and return to following His ways.
We deserve destruction, and yet we receive Jesus. We should be made to eat our words and work off our debt, but we receive freedom and grace instead.
Bottom Line
Look for ways to live out God’s example of forgiveness and compassion—at home, in your past, over all your internal objections.
