Fire Warning

Mountains

Look, all you who kindle a fire, who encircle yourselves with firebrands; walk in the light of your fire and in the firebrands you have lit! This is what you’ll get from My hand: you will lie down in a place of torment. (Isa. 50:11)

Got a Match?

Sometimes we grow weary of waiting on God, confusing activity with accomplishment. The old adage, “Don’t just sit there, do something,” is inbred in every male. We tend to be “fix-it” kind of guys. And in darkness, it seems like things aren’t being fixed very quickly. We are in a hurry, and God seemingly isn’t.

Some of the fires a man lights during these dark times include the fire of direction (leaning on our own intelligence), security (trusting in our riches and wealth), or relationships (believing others can fill a void only God can fill). But if we live by the light of our own fire, we are sure to flame out.

Real Light

“Firebrands” are simply sparks. A spark is very small compared to the true Light of the World. All the different methods by which we would save ourselves are only small, shooting sparks compared to Jesus.

The contrast is simple to understand. The righteous can walk in darkness yet patiently wait for the light that God will kindle for them. Instead of growing impatient, taking things into our own hands, we can wait on the Lord, knowing that His fire is burning even when we can’t see it.

Bottom Line

Give up your fear of the dark (your control issues) by learning that God can be trusted.
