Walking in the Dark

Mountains

Who among you fears the Lord, listening to the voice of His Servant? Who among you walks in darkness, and has no light? Let him trust in the name of Yahweh; let him lean on his God. (Isa. 50:10)

A Light Has Come

Children typically fear the dark, and many of us never get over it. But consider darkness—it is nothing more than the absence of light. Before Jesus came, the world was walking in spiritual darkness. People didn’t have a clear understanding of who God really is. It took the Light of the world to reveal the Father to us, to show us His heart and His redemptive plan. No wonder we worship Jesus as the “light of the world” (John 8:12).

Trusting When We Can’t See

God ordained the Hebrew Sabbath to begin at sunset, when darkness swallows the daylight, when senses are heightened and the need for God is the greatest. He guided the children of Israel with a pillar of fire by night. In the darkness of the wilderness temptation, He sent angels to minister to His only Son. And darkness came over the land as that Son was crucified—yet God was still present.

The verse above instructs us to trust God as we walk in darkness. To be people of “the light” is also to be people of “the night” who lean on the Lord even when we can’t see Him. There will be times when we don’t understand what God is doing or saying, when He is cloaked in mystery. During those times don’t simply celebrate the bright, empty cross of resurrection: celebrate the dark, occupied cross of Good Friday! Keep trusting, even in the dark!

Bottom Line

God doesn’t need light to do His greatest works.
