Give my son Solomon a whole heart to keep and to carry out all Your commands, Your decrees, and Your statutes, and to build the temple for which I have made provision. (1 Chron. 29:19)
House Building
Have you ever watched a house being built? After the foundation is laid, the walls and roof seem to spring up in a few days. But then it takes months before the house is in move-in condition. A six-thousand-square-foot custom home averages about seven months to build. Of that time just over three weeks is needed to frame the house and put on the roof. A bulk of the time is used on finer carpentry and finishing items. While the outside of the house looks good rather quickly, the intricate work that makes the inside of the house structurally sound and livable takes months to complete.
Heart Building
As Christians we need to maintain that same “building” mind-set in our personal lives. Instead of concentrating on our external appearance, we need to focus the vast majority of our efforts on the inside. God is more concerned with the state of our heart than with our looks. King David knew this and asked God to “give my son Solomon a whole heart to keep and to carry out all Your commands” (1 Chron. 29:19). The heart is what matters most.
Building a heart for God doesn’t happen overnight. It requires discipline and effort, consistency in reading and applying God’s Word, learning to serve others joyfully, and praying throughout the day. It takes time, but the work of creating a godly heart will build for you an incredible life.
