Road Rage

Mountains

A fool’s displeasure is known at once, but whoever ignores an insult is sensible. (Prov. 12:16)

Mad Driver

Maybe it’s a Jekyll and Hyde thing. But it’s not unusual for a seemingly mild-mannered man to get behind the wheel of a car and suddenly turn into a NASCAR driver. There’s something about horsepower and metal that makes men want to trade paint at 175 mph . . . or at least causes them to lose their cool when somebody cuts them off.

Road rage is a huge issue for both followers of Jesus and for guys who would never set foot in church. But sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between the two groups when they’re driving.

Swerve Away from Anger

As a wise king once wrote in the verse above, “A fool’s displeasure is known at once, but whoever ignores an insult is sensible.” That’s good advice to follow at work, at home, at the grocery store, and behind the wheel. While it may seem natural to doubt someone’s intelligence who comes to a complete stop in the merge lane, we need to temper our emotions and act sensibly. By overlooking other drivers’ offenses, we’ll be less likely to cuss at them or display frustrated gestures and more likely to make it to our destination safely.

We need to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts all the time—even in the car when some idio-. . . er, person made in the image of God cuts us off or fails to use his turn signal. Our driving is part of our walk with Christ.

Bottom Line

Take the high road when you drive. Steer clear of anger.
