“Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves!” (Mark 11:17)

No Trivial Matter

For many weeks now Art had noticed an issue cropping up at church that greatly concerned him. This went far beyond the color of the hymnals or the size of the pages in the church directory. It was a matter he felt would eventually hamper the work of the church if something wasn’t done about it.

Thing is, Art had never said much about such things. During business meetings, he usually kept quiet and let others do the talking. This issue, however, was far too important for him to sit back and say nothing. When it came time for new business to be discussed, Art raised his hand, cleared his throat, and stood up to speak.

Pick and Choose

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Christians should stand idly by and accept things with which they truly disagree. On many occasions Jesus Himself spoke out against those He saw as hampering the work of His Father’s kingdom. He didn’t just sit back and take it, afraid of what others might think of Him.

It’s important for Christians to pick and choose their battles. Is the issue really that important? Or does it have more to do with the individual’s own stubborn pride? If biblical fidelity is at stake and it’s not a case of bickering about inconsequential details, a Christian’s responsibility is to stand up and be counted.

Bottom Line

Standing up for what’s right is the right thing to do. Just be sure that you’re doing it in a godly, honorable way.
