Finish Well

Mountains

The end of a matter is better than its beginning; a patient spirit is better than a proud spirit. (Eccles. 7:8)

The Starting Blocks

King Solomon had one of the greatest starts in life any human has ever had. He grew up in the palace of his father, King David. At the start of his reign, Solomon chose to ask God for wisdom rather than riches or honor—and God gave him all three! The Bible declares that no one was equal with Solomon in terms of the splendor of his riches and excellent wisdom. Rulers traveled from distant lands to marvel at this king.

The Finish Line

But as Ecclesiastes 7:8 reminds us, “The end of a matter is better than its beginning.” Despite his excellent jump out of the starting gate, Solomon didn’t finish his race well. Most men are challenged to keep their marriage to just one woman healthy and whole. Over the course of his reign, Solomon married seven hundred wives and had three hundred concubines. He allowed his fleshly appetites to flourish and rule and began to lean on his own wisdom to guide him.

Even the wisest man today can become the greatest fool tomorrow if he stops listening to the voice of truth and instruction. It doesn’t take long for a runner to stray from his lane. And many men have grown cold toward God in their later years despite being hot-hearted for Him in their youth. A man never outgrows his need for grace. A humble, patient spirit is rewarded in the end.

Bottom Line

Purpose to keep your eyes on the prize and to end your race of faith well.
