From eternity to eternity the Lord’s faithful love is toward those who fear Him, and His righteousness toward the grandchildren. (Ps. 103:17)
A Sure Promise
Parenthood is full of unpredictable twists and turns. But God’s Word provides us with steady, unchanging truth about family relationships. This psalm is a promise to all parents. As a dad fears the Lord, God directs His love toward that man’s children and His righteousness toward the grandchildren.
What does it mean to fear the Lord? It’s not a destructive fear that God will act unlovingly toward us. Yet it is much more than simple respect. To fear God is to revere Him and His Word, to know that this Sovereign Being could snuff out our lives with one breath but chooses not to because of His great love for us. To fear the Lord is to value His ways and His Word above all others. It is a complete trust in Him that He is with us and will also be with our children and our children’s children.
A Spiritual Legacy
How can you impact the lives of those you haven’t seen and may never see? Highlight your Bible with verses special to you. Keep a prayer journal. Write a note to your unborn children and grandchildren. Above all, live a life worthy of the Lord. Imagine if you had such a note or Bible from your ancestors—would it go a long way toward convincing you that God has His hand on your life? Your faithfulness will impact generations.
