The Bread of Life

Mountains

“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to Me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in Me will ever be thirsty again.” (John 6:35)

Hungry Souls

We get hungry. Often. It’s not uncommon to hear ourselves or others say things like, “I’m starving! I haven’t had anything to eat all day.” When we can hear our stomach growling and we’re beginning to feel a little weak, it’s hard to think about anything other than getting some food. Satisfying our hunger becomes our number-one priority at that point.

The truth is, we need food. We can’t live without it for too long. Asking for our daily bread just makes sense because we need it (see Matt. 6:11). But as much as we need our daily bread to sustain us, we also need the spiritual sustenance that only Jesus can provide. Only He can feed our starving souls.

A Satisfying Savior

In John 6:35, Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” His listeners were asking for a sign like the manna God provided the Israelites as they were traveling through the wilderness (see Exod. 16:4). To this request Jesus replied: “I assure you: Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the real bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world” (John 6:32–33). Jesus is the real bread from heaven. Spiritual hunger is satisfied only by Him. Don’t go hungry!

Bottom Line

The world offers a lot of substitutes, but our spiritual hunger can be satisfied only by Jesus. Ask Him to fill you up with His love for you.
