Belt of Truth

Mountains

Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist. (Eph. 6:14)

Ready for Battle

We’re in a war, a spiritual war, and the stakes are as high as they can be. Our enemy, the devil, throws everything he can at us to render us ineffective for God. More than that, he’s out to make us miserable—the worst kind of witness to a watching world. If we don’t recognize the battle, or if we just wish it away, we’ll get clobbered.

The warfare language in Ephesians 6 and throughout the Bible is there for a reason—a cosmic clash is going on all around us, pitting God and His people against Satan and the forces of evil. We can’t escape it; we have to fight. And to fight well we need to be dressed for battle in the armor that God provides.

Starting with Truth

Using the imagery of a Roman soldier’s armor, Paul lists the Christian soldier’s spiritual armor, piece by piece, in Ephesians 6:10–17. The first five articles of clothing are defensive in nature—they help us stand firm against the enemy. Over the next few days, we’re going to take a look at each one, starting with the “belt of truth.”

Without the truth we’re simply defenseless. Jesus said that the truth sets us free (see John 8:32). Confidence in God’s Word is a must. That’s where the battle starts. The enemy is constantly feeding us lies, so we must fight back with truth.

Bottom Line

Mentally putting on our spiritual armor each day is a great practice. It reminds us we’re in a war and that God has provided protective armor for us.
