Helmet of Salvation

Mountains

Take the helmet of salvation. (Eph. 6:17)

Fighting from Victory

One of the devil’s most effective strategies is to try making us question our salvation. Satan constantly whispers condemning lies, conveying the message that we must not really be Christians given how we still struggle with sin. It can be effective, too, because we do still struggle with sin. We know our failures and duplicity all too well. He takes advantage of that and tempts us to doubt our salvation based on our performance.

When we doubt our salvation, all kinds of things go wrong in our Christian life. We lose our joy. We lose our courage. We lose our love for God. It’s pretty hard to love someone who you feel doesn’t love you or only loves you conditionally. It’s especially hard to love a perfect God who we can (wrongly) believe requires perfection out of us before He will love us. Jesus, however, has secured our salvation once and for all. His performance was perfect, and so is ours in Him.

Free to Fight Back

The gospel is so free, we have a hard time believing it. It’s really hard to accept salvation as a free gift, no strings attached. We revert back to performance mode so easily. But when we do, the devil wins because trying to earn God’s approval is both unnecessary and impossible. More than that, it has the exact opposite effect of what God desires for us—holier lives and security in Him.

Bottom Line

Your eternal security is the result of Christ’s saving work. Wear that knowledge like a helmet protecting your mind from doubt.
