The Restored Life

Mountains

“Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house. Then I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord. (Hag. 1:8)

Pressure from Below

The book of Ezra tells the story of the return of the Jews to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. Though they knew better and had been warned over and over, they disobeyed God’s law, slid further and further into sin, and were eventually taken captive by a conquering nation. When they finally turned back to God (see Ezra 1:5), the process of spiritual restoration began.

But it wasn’t long before they faced opposition from those in the land. Some of that opposition came in the form of an insincere offer to help, which sounded well intentioned. Other opposition was a more direct, in-your-face kind of legal and physical pressure. Before long it became too much, and Israel’s journey toward restoration came to a halt.

Help from Above

It was at this point that the prophets Haggai and Zechariah arrived on the scene. They encouraged the Jews to renew their commitment and continue their work. Today’s verse is part of that rally cry. Yes, it’s an uphill journey. Yes, it’s hard work, but don’t give up! Stay the course. Your restored life will bring glory to God and He will bless you! Living the restored life is not without opposition and discouragement, but it is not without help either. Beware of the habits, friends, or activities that oppose your walk with God. Stand firm in your commitment to Him and receive His help. He will help you rebuild!

Bottom Line

You will face opposition in returning to God or attempting to draw closer. Stay the course!
