What Kind of Tree?

Mountains

He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. (Ps. 1:3)

Are You an Oak?

It’s easy to take trees for granted until you live in the desert where trees do not flourish because the climate is so dry. They need lots of water to develop a strong root system in order to be healthy and fruitful.

Think of majestic maples framing a riverbed, oaks fed by an underground spring, or cypress trees reaching for the sky out of a swamp. The tallest sequoias grow in valleys where year-round streams flow. But you won’t find these beautiful trees in the Mojave Desert.

Where have you chosen to plant your heart? In a parched desert? Or in a verdant rainforest, getting spiritual nourishment every day? It’s a choice every man must make.

Or a Tumbleweed?

In a unique twist Psalm 1 foreshadows John 14:6, where Jesus says to His disciples, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Psalm 1:1 says, “How happy is the man who does not follow the advice of the wicked,” for Jesus is “the way.” Verse 2 says, “His delight is in the Lord’s instruction,” for Jesus is “the truth.” And verse 3 says that you are like “a tree planted beside streams of water,” for Jesus is “the life.” The man who lives in this way lives a prosperous life indeed! Are you following the way, the truth, and the life?

Bottom Line

Take a look at a strong, healthy tree outside, and ask God to show you how your life can be like that.
