Worship Wars

While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. (Gen. 4:8)
The Heart of Worship
How ironic that worship, the gift God has given us to love Him and declare His worth, was also an impetus for the first murder. Who would’ve thought that someone could get so upset during a worship service? But just as in the days of Genesis, “sin is crouching at the door” when we worship (Gen. 4:7), and we must master it.
The issue in Genesis 4 was not over the mode of worship, whether God preferred livestock or produce as an offering. Instead, the acceptability of their worship had everything to do with the motive of their hearts. Cain presented “some” of the land’s produce as an offering, but Abel offered some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. Cain merely “tipped” God while Abel gave from his very best.
One Pure Motive
How quickly we judge others in their worship, deeming theirs to be less than our own. Whether it’s the style of their music, the formality of their dress, or the outward expression of their praise, both young and old have been guilty of assuming their own worship of God is the acceptable version. We’ve assumed “our way” and “God’s way” are the same. Don’t let the way others worship become a heart hang-up for you. Instead, keep your eyes on Jesus, and focus on how your worship offering might please Him. If you do that, you will be blessed and God will be honored.
Bottom Line
Purpose to give God your best in worship this coming Sunday.
