Take God Seriously

Mountains

“Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name.” (Exod. 20:7)

Be Serious

You can hardly watch a movie, read a book, or engage in a conversation that does not use profanity or cursing. It has become commonplace and acceptable. At first sight this commandment seems to be banning such talk, but after careful study this directive is not just about swearing or using four-letter words. The issue is whether or not you take God’s name seriously both in language and in lifestyle.

The idea of name transmits much more weight in the Bible than in our culture. God’s name represents His reputation, His character, and His authority. The word misuse means ineffectual, useless, or empty. To “misuse the name of the Lord,” therefore, means to let God’s name and all that it implies be ineffectual and meaningless in your life.

Be Selective

How do you prevent misusing the Lord’s name? Be selective with your words, especially those you use about God. Watch what you say, guard your mouth, control your tongue. In other words, think before you speak!

Do you realize that as a believer in Christ, you bear His name? Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:3–4: “We give no opportunity for stumbling to anyone, so that the ministry will not be blamed. But as God’s ministers, we commend ourselves in everything.” Everything! Your behavior and your speech reflect on Jesus. Make sure you are representing His name well.

Bottom Line

Be mindful and careful of the words you use about God.
