Mountains

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap all the way to the edge of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the foreign resident; I am Yahweh your God.” (Lev. 23:22)

Smart Money

Who can predict the stock market? Sure, Warren Buffett has done a nice job over the years. But the typical investor doesn’t have the time, expertise, or energy to figure out where he should put his money. During certain downturns in the market, a lot of investors have decided to stuff their money under their mattresses (at least, figuratively), tired of Wall Street crashes and roller-coaster volatility.

But the Bible says there’s one investment that can always be counted on to pay dividends: giving to the poor. Back in Leviticus, God commanded His people not to reap to the edge of their fields or gather the gleanings of their harvest. “Leave them for the poor and the foreign resident,” He said. Instead of looking for every little profit or possible gain, God wanted His people to provide help for the less fortunate.

Give It Away

In tough economic times we all want to be wise with our money. Planning for the future and looking for ways to grow our wealth are good things. But God doesn’t want us to lose focus on the bigger picture. He doesn’t command us to be rich; He does command us to help the needy. Ultimately life is about giving away what you’ve received from God.

Bottom Line

Look for the needy in your area. What can you do to help? If you can’t invest your money, invest your time.
