Why Is This Happening?

Mountains

We do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor. 4:18)

When You’re Down

Some of life’s challenges are completely out of our control, like an illness, accident, or job loss. Others are the result of bad decisions, like debt or marital strain. Over time these kinds of things can cause stress, impacting our health, relationships, productivity, and self-esteem. We become more impatient and quick to anger, prone to temptation by things that help us feel better, at least temporarily.

This happens because our focus has shifted. We’re looking at the situation and its impact on us rather than focusing on God. If we’re even praying at all (and that’s a big “if”), our prayers tend to be complaints or pleas for deliverance. Our grateful, trusting hearts have gone into hiding.

Look In, Reach Up

So how should we respond when we find ourselves in a place of discouragement? A good place to start is a personal assessment: (1) Do I have sin in my life that I need to stop? (2) Do I harbor unforgiveness, bitterness, or resentment that has gone unchecked? (3) Have I been putting off doing something God has directed me to do?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes, God may be using your circumstances to get your focus back on Him. Spend time with Him in prayer. Meditate on His promises. And welcome the opportunity to grow in faith and perseverance.

Bottom Line

God can always be trusted to use your circumstances for your good and His glory. Continue to trust and obey.
