Keep Fighting

Mountains

I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. (Gal. 5:16)

The War Within

Do you ever grow weary of yourself? Weary of struggling with the same temptations? Weary of having good intentions but lacking the seeming ability to follow through? If so, you’re not alone. Every Christian is engaged in a war against sin, and the battleground for this war is located within his own heart.

No peace treaties are forthcoming. No possibility of surrender by our flesh—that stubborn, self-willed part of us that opposes God and His rightful rule. No, we’re locked in a fight to the finish. So given our situation, what should we do? How should we think about this war? Should we just throw in the towel and give up since complete victory is unobtainable in this life?

Growing the Right Desires

The first thing to be said is that this war must be necessary because God has allowed it and He tells us to fight it. The second thing that should be said is that it’s always better to face reality than to flee from it. Therefore, we should embrace this fight courageously rather than running from it or pretending it doesn’t exist.

The battle itself is won or lost at the level of our desires. That’s why it’s so important to be constantly feeding our minds with what the Spirit desires, not what the flesh desires. That means being in God’s Word and praying for His help.

Bottom Line

Never give up. You may lose some battles, but if you keep fighting with God’s strength, you’ll win the war.
