Joy at Your Fingertips

Mountains

The righteous are glad; they rejoice before God and celebrate with joy. (Ps. 68:3)

As Much as You Want

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most of us are just about as happy as we make up our minds to be.” He had a point. Happiness is largely a choice. No, we can’t control all of our circumstances, but we can certainly control our attitude about our circumstances. We can choose to look on the bright side in any situation. And we can adopt habits and practices that will likely increase our happiness too—things like counting our blessings, getting enough sleep, exercising, or serving others in some way. We simply have more control over our happiness than we’re generally willing to admit.

Takes a Little Faith

But a Christian need not settle for a happiness based on circumstances or even obtained through wise, mature strategies (helpful as those may be). A Christian has direct access to the source of all happiness, the source of all joy—God Himself. So complete joy is possible for the Christian because God is an inexhaustible fountain of joy for those who believe. Today’s verse matter-of-factly states that the righteous are “glad” and can “celebrate with joy.” The life of joy that God promises us is truly possible. Joy is not some distant pipe dream; it is right at our fingertips.

Bottom Line

Expectations do impact experience. Recognize that God wants to fill you with joy, and then ask Him to do so. He promises that He will.
