Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. So He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. (Mark 1:30–31)

Meet the Parents

Marriage starts out so innocently, doesn’t it? You have a wedding and then start living with the woman of your dreams. She’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a wife. You can’t imagine that the flame of this wedded bliss will ever die down. But hold your horses there. What’s her family like?

You didn’t just marry a woman. You married a product of two people, also known as “two sinners.” She got some traits from her mother and some traits from her father. She’s also got these other siblings and aunts and cousins, and how are you ever going to keep track of who’s who when you see them?

They’re Your Family Too

The apostle Peter’s care for his mother-in-law suggests something other than the gruff fisherman we picture him to be. One of the best ways you can love your wife is to love her family—even with all its quirks and awkwardness at times. Hey, your own family is quirky too! So how do you love her family? The same way you love anyone else.

Be present and attentive in conversation. Participate in activities they like to do, not just the stuff you’re into. Always speak the truth in love to them. Sometimes you may need to go the extra mile for them due to health or financial issues. It’s all a part of being a Christ follower. It’s also one of the best ways you can ever love your wife.

Bottom Line

Love your wife’s family as your own.
