Face in the Crowd

Mountains

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers. (Acts 2:42)

Life on the Sidelines

For many of us, attending a ball game is nothing short of an “event.” We pack the kids into the car, cooler into the trunk, and we’re off. We may even have a bumper sticker or flag flying from the window touting our favorite team. Then at the stadium, we sit and watch.

The outcome is completely out of our hands. We never actually make it onto the field of play ourselves; in fact, we’re prevented by law from doing so. Stepping out of the grandstands to interrupt play is a bad idea. Those who do will probably be tackled, tasered, and arrested.

Get in the Game

When it comes to our experience in church, however, taking this same spectator approach couldn’t be any further from what God desires for us and calls us to. So prayerfully ask yourself what you’re good at and what seems to bless others. If you think you might be able to teach, give it a shot. If you can sing, sing in the choir. If you’re outgoing, be an usher.

The church is the last place anybody should just watch from the sidelines. God gave you interests and abilities so you could actively use them for His glory. If you’re not already doing so, it may take some time to find your niche. Whatever the case, don’t settle for just being another face in the crowd. Ask God to show you an area of opportunity, and then go for it.

Bottom Line

Don’t be content just to sit back and watch at church. Get in the game and help out!
