God the Pursuer

Mountains

The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10)

The Prime Seeker

Before you ever sought God, God was seeking you. He is the Prime Seeker. The story of God’s pursuit begins in the garden of Eden—God gave Adam and Eve a beautiful garden. Only one tree was off-limits. Adam and Eve passed over orchards of permitted fruits to eat from the forbidden one. Immediately all hell broke loose. Adam and Eve felt ashamed. They covered themselves and hid.

The Bible’s first question is then asked by God: “Where are you?” (Gen. 3:9). He asked, not because He didn’t know, but because He passionately pursues His fallen people. He pursued Adam and Eve even while they hid from Him. And He pursues people today.

The Relentless Seeker

When Jesus was born, God kicked His pursuit of us into high gear. God could have stayed in heaven. He could have lobbed truth bombs from a distance. Instead, He got into our world to go after us.

Jesus told a parable about a host who threw a huge party and invited his friends. His friends, however, couldn’t come; they all made excuses. So the host sent his servants to gather all the hungry street people they could find. After that, there was still room. The master said, “Go out into the highways and lanes and make them come in, so that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23). God relentlessly pursues His people. He’s passionate about us.

Bottom Line

He pursued you when you didn’t want Him, didn’t know Him, and didn’t love Him.
