The Miracle of Peace
The peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:7)
Surpassing Every Thought
Today’s verse is remarkable. Part of what makes it so remarkable is that we can’t fully understand how it works; we just know that it does. The promise is this: when we pray, God gives us His peace, and this peace is more powerful than the onslaught of worrying thoughts. This peace has the power to guard our hearts and minds, which truly need guarding because spiritual warfare is ongoing and fierce. A lot of what drifts into our minds doesn’t originate there. We have an enemy, the devil. And daily we must contend with the sinful world system. On top of that, we are tempted (despite the indwelling of the Spirit) to revert to fleshly (godless) thinking. A battle rages for our minds and for our peace.
Experiencing the Miracle
Have you experienced what today’s verse promises? Have you ever been so totally burdened that even the thought of prayer seems not only impractical but nearly impossible? Have you ever forced yourself to start praying and had trouble shutting down the racing thoughts inside, doomsday scenarios concocted by an overly active imagination that’s been listening to the lies of the devil? Not easy to pray under those conditions. Yet when we persevere in prayer, the miracle of peace comes. Nothing has changed on the outside, but everything has changed on the inside.
Bottom Line
Peace is possible in every situation because God is present in every situation. We need faith to believe the promise, but if we do, the miracle comes.
