Dealing with Anxiety

Mountains

How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day? (Ps. 13:2)

The Pressure Is On

King David endured an onslaught of attacks from both inside and outside his kingdom. His enemies were many, their plots numerous, and it took a toll on this man of God. In today’s verse he asks God how long he must endure “agony in my mind every day?”

You may not have an enemy literally trying to kill you, but you have a spiritual opponent who wages repeated attacks on you. Have you ever felt that you were under siege? A swirl of dilemmas beyond your control may be ramping up your anxiety level. Maybe you are waiting for the hammer to fall at work—or it has already fallen. Or your kid is acting out, and nothing you do seems to help. Your marriage seems strained. Fill in the blank for your own life. Whatever it is, it is consuming you with anxiety.

Resting in God’s Character

Trust is the primary remedy. Leaning into God, going back to Him again and again, and casting your burdened mind on Him are the first steps to peace. Even if the situation does not improve, even if God does not answer your prayer the way you wish, you can gain a tremendous sense of peace by simply trusting that your Father in heaven knows what you are going through and is working “all things” together for your good (Rom. 8:28). Remember, you always have the choice to trust God rather than give in to worry.

Bottom Line

God is working out His plan in your life even if you do not understand why He allows all the heartache.
