Incomprehensible Love

Mountains

I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, and to know the Messiah’s love that surpasses knowledge. (Eph. 3:17–19)

Rooted and Established

A plant with deep roots doesn’t get washed away during a storm. Similarly, a person with deep roots in God’s love doesn’t get washed away during a storm either. And as we all know, this life includes lots of storms. We need to be sturdy people who aren’t going anywhere when the winds of life blow against us.

Every Christian is “rooted” in God’s love by virtue of conversion. We are also “established” in His love. We don’t have to build up to it. We don’t need to achieve anything, qualify for anything, or be a Christian for a certain length of time to be firmly established in His love.

The Need to Grow

Yet while we are “rooted and firmly established in love” as soon as we become Christians, we continually need to grow in our knowledge of God’s love. His love is so strong and unchanging and out of this world, we can’t fully understand it. It “surpasses knowledge.” Yet in the rest of Ephesians 3:19, Paul urges believers to remain focused on Christ’s love “so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” More every day. When our roots are deep and established, there’s no end to the watering and strength we can receive from His incomprehensible love.

Bottom Line

God’s love is not at all like normal human love—fickle, finite, failing. It’s an inexhaustible fountain of goodness and blessing. Pray for more understanding.
