Give It Your All

Mountains

Don’t work only while being watched, in order to please men, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord. (Col. 3:22)

The Goal

Why do you go to work? To provide an income? To fulfill a calling? To pursue a dream? To keep busy? Whatever your reasons, you most likely have days when you lack the energy and motivation to work hard. This may be especially true if your work environment presents stresses like a heavy workload, mistreatment from management and peers, or the uncertainty of job continuity (or all of the above).

Yet Scripture tells us our motivation for working shouldn’t come from our feelings or fears about the job but rather from our commitment to obey God (see Col. 3:22), to be a witness to others (see 2 Thess. 3:7), and to store up treasures in heaven (see Matt. 6:20).

Working Hard

When your job weighs you down and you find yourself daydreaming about your favorite hobby, purpose to show God a thankful spirit by working hard with integrity for your employer. Instead of drudging through another day, ask God to open your eyes to opportunities to be salt and light in your work environment. And save the personal e-mail and sports updates for your lunch break.

Proverbs 18:9 warns that slacking off at work is a destructive path. Work to impress your heavenly boss because your real paycheck is waiting on you in heaven, and you will not be underpaid there!

Bottom Line

Jesus didn’t like every part of His earthly job either, but He submitted to God and carried out His work faithfully and with integrity. You can do the same.
